The story goes back to where it starts which, I’m my opinion is always good. Dan Torrance’s death was perfect as well, to me at least. It’s a book reference as well as a classic Stephen King trick, killing off the MC right at the end

I loved this movie, it was hilarious! I think her reactions were genuine since she was in shock and not thinking rationally, and the final family exploding scene and the scene when she punches the kid were so funny I can forgive some simplistic plot development.

I suspect that reviewers who believe this movie to be the weirdest, most deranged and tripped-out film they've ever seen have not watched many movies. I recommend you watch "The Wicker Man" from 1973, Alejandro Jodorowsky's "The Holy Mountain" and Sergei Parajanov's "The Color of Pomegranates" before you watch this watered down, pretentious murk in order to get a sense of how movies can truly be mind-altering. The "story" is essentially every cliché of the slasher genre mashed together: a group of young people naively go into the wilderness (Sweden, very scary place lol) and encounter messed up stuff. They each die one by one and, SPOILER ALERT, there is a "final girl" who survives in the end. The rest of this cliché story is fluff. If you think, based on the trailer, that much of this film will mirror the original Wicker Man, you are exactly right. There is even a big fire at the end where a guy gets burned alive. There is a fine line between homage and rip-off and this may a great example of a film that slips over the edge into complete rip-off territory. I won't even go into all the logical loopholes in the story and the scenario, or point out that none of the customs line up at all with ancient Scandinavian rituals (thus making one wonder why this even takes place in Sweden to begin with, like, why couldn't this be a cult in upstate NY?) because there's no point. The script doesn't even attempt to be deep, the research here is sub-Wikepedia level, and the characters are cookie-cutter types you've seen before in a million other horror movies. One logical question I would ask, however, is how come all of these people are anthropology PhD students going to research Scandinavian paganism but none of them speak Swedish??!?!? Has the writer ever even talked to someone with a PhD??? All this said, Florence Pugh is a talented actress and does a great job with the shallow script. She transcends the material and shows that she can be a powerful dramatic actress. The cinematography is gorgeous too. The editing and sound are pitch perfect. I was especially taken by the set design, the use of furniture and quirky wall paintings to give the film a sense of intricate beauty to contrast with the horror. This is all really fabulous and the people who worked on these aspects of the film should be commended. It is all cosmetic, however. Without the mask of beautiful production and a gifted actress, the director/ writer Aster has absolutely nothing going on here. "Hereditary" was a very good, solid horror film and I wonder if Aster didn't rush into this sophomore effort too soon. This seems like a script he could have banged out in a night, especially since it feels like something made out of other films. It also seems that Aster repeats some of the same tricks from "Hereditary"- using shocking, Gaspar Noé-like violence and relying on making his audience feel uncomfortable at the sight of incongruously naked people running around. These stock images are going to get old really fast for him, he needs to work on building up to scares that really pay off. There will be people who love this director, who are swept away by the cool style and photography of this film or who have simply never seen any of the hundreds of other movies out there with strange imagery and creepy paganism, and these people are going to think this movie is a mind-blower. That's nice, but please watch "The Wicker Man" from 1973 first before you fall in love with this dumpster fire.

I think a lot of people didn’t enjoy the movie because it was too emotionally demanding or not the typical jumpscare horror. I mean look how successful ‘The Nun’ became from audiences and that was nothing but a jumpscare fest. People tend to like watered down horror sadly.

People say "I would've done adoption before turning to satan" and hearing responses about the cost, but here's a hot take: Considering this movie surrounds the lies the nurses/nuns told him and his parents, the only one who didn't lie was the girl and Satan when he assured the mother the child wasn't gonna be some evil child, could it be that our perception of Satan/Devil/Lucifer being evil is just a lie told by god and/or his followers? Considering the deeds done by god himself on the world and others, why are we to believe his words? Because he says that he himself is right and just? Because he says that if you dont follow HIS words that the "evil" satan will punish you? The mother prayed to god for a baby but he never delivered, whether because he didn't care enough to answer her calls, or because he created her this way and therefore she MUST remain the way she is, unable to bear her child, or for some other reason. She turned to Satan, who helped her with no strings attached. He gave her what she desperately wanted, a child, and as stated before, assured her that while he would be a demon baby, he wouldn't be a "evil" demon baby, perhaps because Satan himself isn't actually evil, but is portrayed as such by god so that he is can rule his followers by fear: "Listen and follow me and when you die, you will be in heaven with me...don't, and you will burn in hell with the evil Satan" There's an interesting religion/philosophy which sees Satan, or rather Lucifer, as the guiding figure, called Luciferianism. In which, they see Lucifer not as an evil figure, but as a figure of enlightenment, one who rebelled against the authoritarian God. He is not worshipped as a deity, or rather, wishes not to be. Where the purpose isn't to live your life dictated by a deity, but by your own standards. You must be able to recognize good and bad by yourself, and learn that all actions can have positive and negative consequences on it's own, not because someone told you so. Individuality and your own self is the main teaching, and everyone should live their own life and make the most of every single day, and help influence the environment around them and cherish human life through arts and science. Truth, and freedom of will. You don't worship anyone, but your inner self and your own potential. While most likelt not the film's purpose and message, I feel like it creates an interesting narrative on our preconceived notion regarding religion and evil. Is Satan and his children, who while possess abilities have never been shown to be evil, actually evil; or are the religious parents who lied to him, the nuns/nurses who tried to kill him, and who they follow the real evil?

There Is a few Easter eggs when they show all the monsters you can see a witch a tank of Boomer in an a smoker from Left 4 Dead they're very hard to see though

I liked the film overall, but I had a couple of issues with it. First, I do like the political commentary involving Marta's character, backstory, and relationship with the family. That part of it was well done, but Johnson goes a little too overboard and kind of beats the audience over the head with it through the dialogue (not only taking me out of the film but also possibly dating it as well). Second, while the buildup to Ransom being the killer was well done, his motives for doing it, I found a bit underwhelming because it was pretty much the same motive as everyone else: he was being cut off in the will and wanted his share. If his motives were more along the lines of, say, Don Johnson's character where Harlan discovered a horrible secret that he was trying to keep covered up and Ransom set this plan in motion to keep the secret from coming out (possibly having this on top of wanting to get his share from the will), then I think his motive would have been that much more satisfying to me.

You didn't mention the possibility that Hank is still hanging on the beach, and the rest of the movie was his near-death experience. A hallucination. This is a strong interpretation as a couple of times when they argued, Harry Potter would give up hope, Hank would be like 'no Harry please', and then he starts waking up back on the beach, still hanging. Just for a second though, then he's back into the hallucination.
